Brothers/Nevala/Carswell/Kozak: Three Times Two

Chamber jazz sounds are sleek as produced by the quartet of Michael Brothers/dr, Andy Nevala/p, and either Jeff Carsell/b or Chris Kozak/b on a mix of covers and self-penned material. The trios mix and match between acoustic and electric, as on the latter format there’s a dreamy take of Jobim’s “Passarim” with soft keyboards with the team does a clever read of The Eagles’ “Life in the Fast Lane” with some electric piano and bass to create a spacy shuffle, while Sting’s “Perfect Love…Gone Wrong” is a floating collection of cirrus clouds. Carswell does some nice work on a flexible read of Jaco Pastorious’ “Dania” while creating droplets of dew with Nevala on the acoustic “Find My Way to Love.” Brothers is subtle in his keeping the music within the corrall, guiding with his cymbals on Nevala’s “Ireland.” Impressive impressions.
