Tony  Kofi and the Organisation: Point Blank

Even the cover of this album by baritone saxist Tony Kofi and his team of Pete Whittaker/org, Pete Cater/dr and Simon Fernsby/g looks like a vintage Blue Note album, as the UK artist revisits hard bop classics from the 50s and 60s associated with the iconic label. The team swings hard with some hot guitar likes to the Wes Montgomery “Full House”  with a snappy “Ready and Able” have the Jimmy Smith tune crackling with delight on Hammond and bari. Kofi sighs on “Search for Peace” and is as thick as a brick with wide vibrato on Pepper Adams’ “Bossallegro.” Cater rides the cymbal like a bucking bronco for Duke Pearson’s bopper “Minor League” and the team is warm and relaxed for Horace Silver’s “Summer in Central  Park.” Comfort food to the ears.
