Shelly Berg: Gershwin Reimagined-An American In Paris

A mix of history and fresh new ideas come together as pianist Shelly Berg uses his trio of Chuck Berghofer/b and Gregg Field/dr to combine with original orchestrations of Gershwin masterpieces. A rich read of “Rhapsody In Blue” includes Berg in solo and trio form, while An American in Paris/Home Blues” includes vocalist Ledisi in  a rich and bluesy hue. Arturo Sandoval’s warm horn joined with Monica Mancini make for a gorgeous “I Loves You Porgy/My Man’s Gone Now” which hints at the classic Ella/Armstrong recording, and some fun violin work swings up “Fascinating Rhythm.” Berg takes charge on the “Three  Preludes” with the band being struck up for “I Got Rhythm.” Fresh ideas with early 20th Century. Not a bad combo!
