Roseanna Vitro: Tell Me The Truth

Roseanna Vitro does some clever re-arranging of jazz and pop standards on this rewarding album with Mark Soskin/p, Dean Johnson/b, RudyRoyston/dr, Mitch Stein/g, Tim Ries/sax, Nathan Eklund/tp and some guest vocalists. The Soskin-arranged horns serve Vitro well on a lonely noir read of “Walkin’ After Midnight” while Vitro gives an easy laid back rock as she breathes easy on “On Your Way Down.” She sounds street wise with Ries’ tenor and some bending guitar strings during “Your Mind is On Vacation” and gets gospel-mooded with Al Chestnut on “Respect Yourself” and on “I’ll Fly Away” with a Sunday morning choir of Sara Caswell, Kate McGarry and Cindy Scott. An intriguing read of Creedence Clearwater’s famed “Fortunate Son” has Vitro opening with a preachy message before the team shifts into a modal mood, while the band does some rich work with horns and guitar on a dreamy “When Will I Be Loved” that defies comparison to the early rock tune. Vitro gets street wise on this one!
