Trumpeter and composer Cuong Vu forms a creative and intuitive quartet featuring guitar wizard Bill Frisell as well as Luke Bergman/b and Ted Poor/dr. The overall sound which features Vu’s warm and rich tone combined with Frisell’s elliptical six string tones comes across like a latter day version of Miles Davis’ In A Silent Way, with its brooding moods and subtle fusion of electronic guitar and horn. Frisell’s tones form a drapery for Vu’s plaintive tone on “All That’s Left of Me” while rich impressions abound on “Round and Round” and the dreamy wafts of “Round And Round (Back Around).” With Poor on Rhodes and Bergman adding extra guitar, the band creates a chiming play of harmonics on “Lately” while on “Look, Listen” Poor clip clops to a languid blues line. The rhythm team gently trudges with Vu and Frisell creating tensile textures on “Long Ago” and the sighing “Must Concentrate” with Vu’s fat tone reflecting on a subliminal “Far From Here. “ Rich shadows of The Sorcerer are cast here, and cast well.
