Pianist Lynne Arriale is undeservedly overlooked these days when it comes to thinking of important jazz trios. Her team of Jasper Somsen/b and Jasper Van Hulten/dr is both strong and lyrical, working with a mix of originals and clever covers on this latest album. The rhythm team crackles as Arriale dances over the track on “Apassionata” and bops with chiming delight on the high stepping “Slightly Off Center” while the team gets fun and funky during “Over and Out.” With Van Hulten’s mallets, Arriale creates a morning mist on the reflective title track while takes The Beatles’ “Let It Be” and turn it into the meditative track it always deserved to be. Ripples of waves undulate on “Woodstock” and with Kate McGarry’s voice, a duo read of Tom Waits’ “Take It With Me” is a tender and personal etude. Charms the socks off.
