As if Leonard Bernstein’s classic West Side Story isn’t Latin enough, drummer Bobby Sanabria adds some extra salsa with a hard hitting 20 piece big band that includes four, count ‘em four percussionists! Sanabria even sings during the bel canto rendition of “Maria,” but for the most part this is an Afro-Cuban avalanche of joy. The team does a calypso of “Gee, Officer Krupke” while some steel drums and flute sweat it out on the “Gym Scene” that includes both a “Blues/Mambo” and “Cha Cha Cha.” The horn sections go back and forth like a street fight on “America” while they sizzle and steam on “Cool.” Even if you’ve heard this a million times, you’ll have a good listen to this rendition.
