The John Colianni Sextet: I Never Knew

Pianist John Colianni leads a swinging team of Matt Chertkoff/g, John David Simon/ts, Grant Stewart/ts, Ralph Hamperian/b and Bernard Linette/dr through a mix of originals and standards. The two tenor team works amazingly well, as the sound like the Count Basie reed section on the toe tapping “Achtung” and the peppy take of the title track. Colianni is able to go from slinky cocktail musings with Chertoff on “Sunset in Santa Fe” to a fun chimey and quasi R&B groove on the Monk classic “Little Rootie Tootie” that has the horns grooving with Linette’s snappy sticks. The team does the herky jerky “See Saw” and goes languid on the bluesy “I Didn’t Know About You.” A clever re-working of the classical “Fur Elise” is a hoot, while the team gets frisky on “Blues For Naomi.” A nice mix of swing and sway.
