All you have here are two ladies, Cheyenne Cruz on bass clarinet and Hannah Leffler on flute. But what they produce with their talent capital is quite impressive. They share the writing skills while using voice and hand percussion to create an exciting mosaic of songs and sounds. Vocal chirps and beats mix with exotic reed and woodwind on pieces like “Bare” while Cruz gurgles to what sound like tape effects on the fun “Bulgama.” Leffler floats and dives like a pelican with stringlike support on “Dionysus” with impressionistic tones on ”II. Yousafszai.”
A couple pieces such as “Nebula Mosaic Malala” and “I. Malalai of Maiwand” have Leffler adding Asian tones to her flute while the two create rich harmonies on the earthy Third World “Red Forest” and textured Old World “Valentina.” I’m not sure what they can do for an encore, but this one is a walk off homer!
