Phil Haynes & Free Country: My Favorite Things (1960-1969)

A soundtrack for Baby Boomers is created on this two disc set by Hank Roberst/cel-voc, Jim Yande/g, Drew Gress/b and Phil Haynes/dr-arr. Songs by Jimi Hendrix (“Little Wing,” “Fire,” “Purple Haze”) ‘The Beatles (“Let it Be,” “Here Comes the Sun” “Come Together”) are given folksy interpretations, with Roberts’ homespun voice teaming with his cello. You get a cozy rendition of “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” as well as the team digging a deep groove on The Doors’ “Touch Me.” Most intriguing of all is the swinging read of the “Star Trek” theme song, while even John Coltrane gets a nod, with two songs from “A Love Supreme” popping up, including a meditative read of lyrics. The only thing missing are the lava lamps and black light posters.
