Modern and vintage classical sounds are delivered with a jazz sensibility in this intelligent album with alto saxist Randal Despommier teaming with pianist/keyboardist Jason Yeager. They include guest appearances by Aubrey Johnson/voc, DannY Weller/b and Jay Sawyer/dr, but the focus is on reflective interpretation of material by the likes of Milhaud, Scriabin and Messiaen. The team shows its thought process and instincts with a clever mix of Stravinsky and Ray Noble as soft piano and alto sax eventually swing out on “Rite of Cherokee.” The duo bops as Yeager provides Rhodes tones on Messiaen’s “Danse De La Fureur” while reflective ivories team with creamy reeds on Milhaud’s “La Poesie” and swing with Johnson’s voice on “Telekinesis” and get celestial for “The First Flowers.” The mood stays consistently pastoral and impressionistic, as if you were sonically walking through Monet’s garden.
