Tenor saxist Noah Preminger has one of the thickest tones in jazz, and he relies on it well to keep together this loose and left of center post bop team with Jason Palmer/tp, Kim Cass/b and Dan Weiss/dr. Tricky and intricate themes such as “Halfway to Hartford” and the melodic “Mad Town” (with Palmer’s rich trumpet) have Weiss creating some clever undercurrents which Preminger long boards over, while Cass throbs to Preminger’s sighs on “The Genuine One” and the abstract “TS and Her Spirit.” The horns slither to Weiss’ conversations on “Ah” with the bluesy harmonies of “Nashua” oozing to the groove. Clever and yet casual.
