Mike McGinnis: Singular Awakening

Soprano saxist Mike McGinnis creates a collection of pastoral watercolors with Art Lande/p and Steve Swallow/eb for a stroll through a Givenchy mooded collection of originals. McGinnis’ tone is clarinet sweet, fun on the hip bopper “Here Comes Everybody” and breathy during the romantic “For Elise” while squawking for effect on the frisky “Shockinawe.” The melding of Swallow’s delicate and dancing bass lines with Lande’s Debussy-esque touch makes  impressive impressionistic water colors on the folksy “Flaherity Decides to Play Jazz” and a pulsating “A first Memory” while the bassist shows how to mix pulse with lyricism during “Insist on Something Sometimes” and “Bite Your Grandmother.” McGinnis makes wise choices in terms of team and tone selection.
