Mark Murphy: Pocketful of Miracles

This is not an album by the jazz vocal pioneer Mark Murphy, but rather a relaxed take of standards with a dash of 70s James Taylor mellowness. Mark Murphy has a warm and avuncular tone, with a delivery that is casual, teamed with the likes of Dayna Stephens/ts, Jon Cowherd/p-org, Jeff Ballard/dr, Gilad Hekselman/g and Tony Scherr-Chris Morrissey/b. The mood has a Cumberland gap feel, making “Lay Lady Lay” and the VFW mooded “Hey Good Lookin’” fitting perfectly well together. He’s cozy by the fireplace on “Come Fly With Me” and “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” while his own material “Conversations” and “Watching The Waves” are Ry Cooder rich. Folksy with a swing.
