Pianist/composer Miguel de Armas leads a sleek team of Michel Medrano/dr-perc, Marc Decho/b and Arien Villegas/cong along with guests Carlitos Medrano/ong, Mathier Senechal/b, Galen Weston/g, Jane Bunnett/ss and Alex Baro/tp for some rich compositions. De Armas’ compositional and arranging skills have a feel like vintage Steely Dan, mixing accessible jazz with pop on the easy grooving “Yasmina” or the feel good “His Bass and Him.” A nice Caribbean percussive feel uplifts the peppy “Pam Pim Pam Pim” while De Armas shows his flair at the piano on “What’s to Come” and with the rich ballad “Illusion.” Lots of positive energy emitted here.
