The unorthodox quartet Kaze consists of a two trumpet lead with Christian Pruvost with Natsuki Tamura leading the way with piano legend Satoko Fujii and Peter Orins/dr. The music consists of six originals, almost all of them sounding like spontaneous creations, with minor direction. The most cohesive piece, “Morning Glow” has Fujii creating a tensile and creepy intro which gradually builds up into a pulsating and gripping climax with the twin trumpets. Other times, the horns mix with long tones and plodding pulses as the trudge through “Hypnotique” Sympathie” or create a feeding frenzy with Orins’ drums on the frantic “Moving.” Percussive effects create a cleverly agitated undertow for soft horns on the moody title track, with free form rustling and things going bump in the night with splattering trumpet on “Inspiration 2” or the avalance of “”Meta-Blizzard.” Long undulations of calm and chaos.
