Earth toned vocalist Janiva Magness leads a team of Stephen Godges/dr, Davey Faragher/b, Arlan Schierbaum/key, Doug Livingston/dobro-stg, Dave Darling/g, Phil Parlapiano/p, a backing horn and vocal section with some special guests on this rural collection of tracks. She mixes a Memphis stew with gospel soul with a hip B3 on “Back to Blue” while giving a Mavis Staples feel to “What’s That Say About You.” Some lovely pedal steel by Livingston brings a Cumberland gap feel to “When It Rains” and with Rusty Young” things get a poco more countrified on “On and On.” Producer and guitarist Dave Darling keeps the feel folksy on the troubadourian title track and lets Magness get vulnerable as she puts her heart on her sleeve on “Tell Me.” American tones.
