REGGAE GOT SOUL…The Expanders: OTSCBA Vol. 2, Jesse Royal: Lily of Da Valley

Fresh sounds from Jamaica…

OTSCBA stands for “Old Time Something Come Back Again,” so the team of John Asher/dr, John Butcher/g-vox, Roy Fisherll/key, Chiquis Lozoya/b-vox, Devin Morrison/g and Scott Abels/perc mix prophetic messages with lilting grooves. Lots of vocal harmonies make tunes like “Walla Wall” and “Try Me One More Time” deliver a churchified feel, while roots like Toots and the Maytals get  peppy on “ Brutal” and the Jimmy Cliff-inspired “We Are Free” with some thumping organ. Earthy sounds and sweet voices.

Jesse Royal mixes and matches with artists including Makin White-Natty Rico/dr, Lamar Brown/key, Kawain Williamson-Jason Welsh/b and various guests on this R&B fested session. Hints of Shaft come up on “400 Years” with some chunky riffs during “Rock It Tonight” and the synth grooved “Finally.” Horns and voices give depth to “Always Be Around” and some rap delivery gets urban on “Roll ME Something.” Themes with variations.
