Here’s an impressive and strong quintet lead by trumpeter Rachel Therrien. With a collection of stallions Benjamin Deschamps/sax, Charles Trudel/p, Alain Bourgeois/dr and Simon Page/b, she takes you through a collection of team composed pieces. Her own horn is impressively strong and confident, swaying on the muscular “Why Don’t You Try” supported by Bourgeois’ crisp work, while the snappy and upbeat “Spectrum” has her bold and brash. The Nefertiti-lie “Demi-Nuit” has the horns sighing with melancholy harmony, while the team gets soulful with Trudel’s keyboards on “Tomber En Cinq.” The rhythm section is nimble on the frisky “Omelette Coleman” and bops with delight on the peppy “Adirondack Jump.” Therrien can create many a mood with her horn, crying in a honey’d mood on “CRS” while moody and misty when muted on “Hayde Santamaria.” A winning outing for post bop friends.
