Mark Martyre: Rivers

Singer/songwriter Mark Martyre comes off like an early Tom Waits with a gruff voice, rootsy folk feel and intriguing stories to tell. His tone is leathered and world weary, sometimes teaming with Stacey Dowsel as on the cozy “(I Think) We Might Be OK” with just the voices, guitar and accordion, or on the fuller troubadour feel on “Trying to Explain.” Some piano from the parlor gives a trad feel on “Anywhere But Here” and an indie beat by drummer with acoustic and electric guitars give “For Her and the River” an intimate yet quirky feel. Cumberland gap is visited.
