The brother team of George/p and Geoff/b Hazelrigg bring in drummer John O’Reilly for a fun collection of jazzy interpretations of mostly 70s fm rock hits. The idea works well here, as O’Reilly brings deft brush work to a nimble and bluesy take of Jethro Tull’s “Living In The Past” and is buoyant on Sting’s “Spirits IN The Material World.” Not trying to be imitative of the original material, the trio takes the ideas of the songs and uses them as starting points, so there is thoughtful interplay between the brothers on “King of the World” and dark, foreboding textures on “If 6 Was 9.” A ringer in the mix is an elegiac take of Bartok’s “Evening in the Country” and the most surprising read is a gentle rise and fall crest of Led Zeppelin’s “What Is And What Should Never Be.” Creative and successful.
