John Stein & Dave Zinno: Wood and Strings

Sublime duets like the one presented here by guitarist John Stein and bassist Dave Zinno make are one of the simple  pleasures of life. These two gents take standards, originals and obscurities and turn them into gently swinging conversations. Stein’s guitar lines a Herb Ellis-like clean, glistening as he embraces pieces like “I Remember You” and an ebullient “But Beautiful” while showing he can have some fun on the frets with his own nifty “Up and at “Em” and “Sarlat.” For his part, Zinno delivers a hip bop line to “Birk’s Works” and is resonant on “Beatrice” with the two digging into a soulful mood on “Estate” and exuding sophistication on the resonant “Modinha.” Use of space, interplay and conversational back and forth makes this a sensitive and sleek delight, demonstrating that less can be more.
