The first time I heard the term “prepared piano” was on a Brian Eno album back in the mid 70s. I know that it’s been around for over a century, and John Cage did a lot of work with it. Basically, the definition is usually something like “a piano with objects placed on or between the strings, or some strings re-tuned, to produce an unusual tonal effect.” That is the case here, as these 8 songs definitely create an unusual collection of sounds.Tinny tones akin to a banjo are produced on”A Sparse One” while an out of tune kalimba goes on for almost 12 minutes during “A Long One.” Fence wires seem to be caught on ones fishing line during “A Half and Half One’ and a maybe someone is playing the saw on the annual Talent Show during “A Low One.” Plucks at random on the strings appear on “A Muted One” and the ivories are actually touched, or are they jabbed, on “A Plucked One.” Would this album work on “Name that Tune”?
