Michael Morreale: Love and Influence

Michael Morreale plays mostly trumpet, but also the flugelhorn on this 2 disc collection of wonderful mainstream bop along with Jon Gordon/as-ss, John Allred/tb, Rony Regusis/p, Bill Moring/b and Tim Horner/dr. Linda Soria loans her voice on.  the lovely “Just One Day,” but for the most part, you get swinging originals like vintage Blue Note or Prestige sessions from the 50s and 60s. His horn can get romantic as on “Manhattan” or bluesy on “F8 Off Rio Grande,” while getting as hip as Freddie Hubbard on “439 AVE C.” Regusis’s piano is delicious during “”Leonard Schiller” and Horner’s brushes are nimble during “Whacked Out On Morton,” but it’s the leader’s horn that wins you over, particularly on bel canto romances such as “Manhattan” and “Jennifer.” This is a fun one!
