Dominic Duval-Vincent Loccisano-Chris Covais: The Project

The songs and authority of Michel Petrucciani is emphasized on this cohesive album by bassist Dominic Duval, pianist Vincent Loccisano and drummer Chris Covais. Half the material is from the French master, and the exciting intricacies of pieces like  “Regina” or the driving post bopper “Thirteen” are treated with authority and fervor. There’s a gospel bluesiness to Loccisano’s touch on “Catabile” that creates an extra texture, and his soft hands on “Gary’s Waltz” shines like Waterford Crystal, while Covais gets a chance to workout on the extroverted “Looking Up” and snaps everyone to attention during “Faces Face.”  Duval takes on Wayne Shorter’s “Yes Or No” with a thoughtful bass line, and pulsates a subtle calypso for the Loccisano on a stately “Night and Day.” This team exudes strength and confidence, both things of necessity when tackling compositions by these modern masters.
