Andrew Hartman: Compass

Guitarist Andrew Hartman creates a pastoral album of impressionistic moods on this rich album with Chris Cheek/ts-ss, Ike Sturm/b and Zach Harmon/dr. The leader has a spacious and cool quality to his approach, working well with Cheek’s palpably rich tenor on “The Heights” and “Waiting,” while the rhythm team works on the “less is more” theory of support, creating rich spaces on “For Marie Elaine” and “America.” The team flexes their collective muscles a bit on “London Blues” and “Chic Korea” with Hartman’s legato lines weaving through the minefield. Impressive collection of pastels.
