Pianist Joachim Kuhn forms an organic trio with Chris Jennings/b and Eric Schaefer/dr for some cohesive interpretations of clever covers and thoughtful originals. It’s the rare jazzer that does anything by the rock group The Doors, but Kuhn approaches two of them; “The End” has Jennings’ bass underneath some glistening piano work, while “Riders on the Storm” undulates with foreboding delight. Kuhn’s fingers are calm and collected on a reflective “Summertime” while his solo work on Ornette Coleman’s “Beauty and Truth” us rich and spacious. Of the originals, the trio dances to Machineria” and go into overdrive on “Transmitting.” Schaefer’s ride cymbal pulses like a marathon runner on “Because of Mouloud” and turns into a Latin lover on “Sleep On It.” All throughout the session, the team is as seamless as a Raphael tapestry.
