Vocalist Amy Black must have grown up visiting the STAX studio museum, as she sounds like she was weaned on material created by founder Jim Stewart on this soulful album. The rhythm section of Joe Restive-Bobby Manuel/g, Al Gamble-Charles Hodges/key, Leroy Hodges/b and Howard Grimes-George Sluppick/dr are made to groove a la Booker T and the MGs, while the horn section consisting of Marc Franklin/tp,Kirk Smothers/ts, Art Edmaiston/bs smolders and sweats. Black has a sandied and leathered voice, getting nice and bluesy with the B3 on pieces like “It’s Hard to Love an Angry Man” while getting the feet stomping n “The Blackest Cloud” and “ What Makes a Man.” Some Steve Cropper licks are served gospel style on “WIthout You” and the strings grown in agony on “I Need Your Love So Bad.” Black goes gray on the moody “Let the Light In” and heads noir with acoustic guitar on “Nineteen.” All that’s missing is some Church’s Fried Chicken or dried rub BBQ from Corky’s and you’re set for the night.
