Vanessa Collier is a triple threat as she sings with moxie, plays the sax like Maceo Parker and composes blues like Steve Cropper on this satisfying collection of R&B groovers. Her alto has the feel of the Fabulous Flames as she gets funky on “Two Parts Sugar, One Part Lime,” the Crescent City styled “Meet Me Where I’m At” and the shuffling “Whiskey and Women.” Her vocals are earthy and husky, sounding like she came out of a STAX studio on “Dig a Little Deeper” and with a chorus on “You’re Gonna Make Me Cry” while a delta blues gets gritty on “When It Don’t Come Easy “ and the rural “When Love Comes to Town.” Even better is when she taps into the roots of the blues, namely gospel as Laura Chavez delivers a rich guitar solo on the churchified “Up Above My Head” and the lady testifies with an “Amen” on “ Devils On The Downside.” She’s got soul in more ways than one!
