Bassist Luke Sellick brings together some soulful jazz on this easy to please collection of originals. He mixes and matches warm hearted horns Jimmy Greene/ts, Jordan Pettay/as, Benny Benack III/tp, Mat Jodrell/tp, Andrew Gutauskas/bcl with a rhythm team of Adam Birnbaum/p, Andrew Renfroe/g and Kush Abadey-Jimmy MacBride/dr.
The team opens with a horn rubato on the “Prelude” before the go for a hip ride on “Q-Tippin” and the Poinciana lilt of “Brothers.” Greene sighs through h is tenor on the warm “Hymn” while Sellick and Birnbaum get nimble on the title track. The team shows its swagger on “Dog Days” while the Brazilian “Abacus” is a nice spotlight for Renfroe’s open field running. The team is safe at “Home” as the rhythm team scores on a hook slide. Lots to tap the toes to here.
