Dominic J. Marshall plays with a surfeit of keyboards and electronics as he teams up with Glenn Gaddum/b, Jamie Peet/dr, Sam Vicaryb, Sam Gardner/dr and Lars Dietrich/as for a collection of originals. The songs all feature moments of a “classic” jazz trio with some hip grooves and melodies such as the graceful “Leaves Dance” or “Ptah’s Vibration,” but the leader likes to add intros, outros or segues into intriguing effects with piano strings (“White Nights” or electronics “ Windermere” as well as funky keyboards and bass (“Elephant Man”) to add a dash of experimentation and keep the listener guessing. While at time the extra dashes seem a bit for their own sake as on “Free Palestine,” for the most part they add some hipness to the atmosphere, as on “Fictions” and the hip post bop “Blue Lotus.” How does he do this in concert?
