Austin Hanks: Alabastard

Alabama native Austin Hanks is rootsy and gritty on this album produced by guitarist Billy Gibbons, who brings some ZZ toppings to the scene. Hanks has a Bruce Springsteen-flavored urgency and tone to his voice, which works well in this blue collar atmosphere of tunes that range from honky tonking pieces like “”Lakeside” to road trip rock as on “Worth the Fight” and “Alive & Untied.” Gibbons brings some Delta strings into the mix with a country rocker as Hanks growls on “Bone, Muscle and Blood” and the team gets swampy on “Savior Self. “ Jimmy Hall brings his Wet Willie voice to join in on pieces like the folksy and heartfelt “Aching Need” and the team sounds stark raving blue on “Toughest Part of Me.”  Music made for a late night at the VFW.
