Ani Cordero: Querido Mundo

Ani Cordero mixes songs of love, protest and politics as well as sounds ranging from indie to traditional Latin on this latest album. She plays guitar, keyboards and percussion as she sings with a sensuous voice along with Erich Hubner/g-b, Eileen Willis/acc, Lisette Santiago/perc, Omar Akil Little/tp, Troy Simms/sax and Ethan Donaldson/perc.

Some ‘60s guitar sounds and synthesize percussion joing together for ethereal yet rhythmic pieces like “Me Tumba” and “Culebra” and some bohemian accordion give a folksy feel to “Luto Por Nuestro Amor” and “Voy Caminando.” Most interesting is the African guitar lilt teaming with percussion on “Piensas En Mi” and “El Pueblo Esta Harto” while exciting Afro Cuban grooves give the latter an extra kick and mariachi horns tam up with acoustic percussion for a clever meld of traditional and modern on “Sacalo.” Each song sounds almost like a different band, and Cordero’s voice is flexible enough to fit into any costume as well on this varied panorama of sounds and song.
