Patrick Zimmerli Quartet: Shores Against Silence

Tenor saxophonist Patrick Zimmerli teams up for a post bop outing with Kevin Hays/p, Larry Grenadier/b, Tom Rainey/dr and Satoshi Takeishi/perc. His feel and sound is quite cerebral and thoughtful, creating intricate pieces such as the elliptical and angular “The Paw” and the assertive “Hephaestus.” He’s got a rich and thick tone, sometimes going puffy during the rumbling of “Three Dreams of Repose” and testing the range of the sax as he jabs and squeals during the Monkishly kinetic “Athena.” Most sublime and serene is the dash of Maiden Voyage on the fluid “Soft Blues” which allows Rainey’s cymbal to gently urge the music forward. Music for gray matter.
