Tenor saxist Ian Christensen teams up with Noah Bernstein/as, Ryan Meagher/g, Andrew Jones/b and Jonas Oglesbee/dr for some free flowing post modern pieces that veer between vintage Mingus and West Coast Cool. The pianoless group has a mix of looseness and blues that works well, as Christensen’s tone and sense of harmony gives hints of Warne Marshe on “L & W” and “8 Bars of Poetry.” Meagher picks out soft strums as the melodies “Worn Luster” and “Naptime” go from Monk to ambience at the drop of a chord. At times the team gets frisky with honking reeds on “Catty Wampus” but for the most part there is much space, subtones and swerving themes to create moments of reflection.
