Soft toned trumpeter revisits the mood and sounds of 50s cool with a modern touch on this pianoless quartet with Joel Frahn/ts, Martin Wind/b and Matt Wilson/dr. The team is light on its collective feel as Wilson sets the pace on a light and bouncy read of “A Night In Tunisia” with Horace Silver’s hard bop classic “Strollin’” has a sublime lilt created by Wind and Wilson for Morgan’s feathery horn and Frahm’s muscular reed to ride the wave like a long boarder. Her delicate sighs work to great benefit on a fragile read of “Autumn Leaves” while she is peppy along with Frahm’s muscular tenor on “On A Misty Night.” Wilson sows his usual class and style as his cymbals creatively nudge the team along on the laconic “Night” while the hefty “Song For Mom” has him ride the whip for the horns to bite down on the bit and gallop. Subtitled, “The Night Shift” this album has wonderful shadows and reflective lights from the ’49 Buick.
