Rory Block: Keepin’ Outta Trouble

Rory Block gives a bona fide tribute to the country/gospel blues legend Bukka White on this impressive and heartfelt release. She splits the material between songs composed by him, performed by him, or inspired by him and delivered by Block’s own pen. She plays all the guitars and uses percussion ranging from spoons, salad forks, and Quaker Oats boxes to give a down homespun feel. As for her voice, she sings with a feist as if she’s lived it, knowing when to growl or purr, sounding juke jointy on “Bukka’s Day” or back porch cozy on the picking and grinnin’ pair of “Gonna Be Some Walkin’ Done” and “Back to Memphis.” Her slide is better than Lou Brock on “Aberdeen Mississippi Blues” and she takes you to moss filled Magnolias with her dobro on “Panama Limited.” The sadder but wiser girl for me.
