PROG ROCK RETURNS…Van Der Graaf Generator: Do Not Disturb

The three early cogs of Van Der Graaf Generator get together one more time and reach forward while reaching back. Hugh Banton/key-b, Guy Evans/dr and Peter Hammill/p-g-voc mix vintage 70s progressive rock and make the younger generation sound safe and sane. Hammill’s quirky vocals still grab your attention  as the synths and guitars rock together on “Alfa Berlina” and “Aloft.” Moody keyboards abound, with the sounds creating spacious and spacey moods on”Go” while Hammill and Evans still show they can rock hard on “Forever Falling” and “(Oh No! I Must Have Said) Yes.” Hints of Mahler and Bohemia pop up with an accordion in the mix on the thoughtful “Shikata Ga Nai” and the ballad “Room 1210” has some thoughtful piano work in the mix. Some groups just defy categories, and Hammill & company have made a successful career of always surprising people.
