Matt Savage: Piano Voyages No. 12

Pianist Matt Savage does solo readings of his own material as well as some clever versions of standards on this intimate and classy album. He goes smooth and impressionistic on the Beatles’ classic “Got to Get You Into My Life” while his read of “Maiden Voyage” makes the Hancock piece mix classical and blues. His own material “To The Sky” reveals serenity, and “25 Percent is relaxed and thoughtful.” Saxist Erena Terakubo joins in for a soulful duet on Wes Montgomery’s “Road Song” which leads to the album to close on a verdant “Lullaby for Boston.” Savage has a warm and elastic touch, mixing confidence with pastel sounds.
