Bassist Stephan Crump serves up a light and flexible swinging unit with Tyshawn Sorey/dr, Ellery Eskelin/ts and Adam O’Farrill/tp. The lack of piano or guitar keeps the sound spacious and uncluttered, giving room for some loose and casual atmospheres. The melding horns create soft and fluffy clouds of sound on an all bluesy “Loose Bay” while they meander slightly off the beaten path only to be pulled back by the drums and bass n “Tschi.” Sorey’s ride cymbal keeps things bopping on “Skippaningam” and gently nudges the horns on “Grovi.” Crump’s bass bows and broods on the dirge-like “Pulling Pillars” and gets things funky on the peppy “Esquima Dream.” Floating and free, but never drifts away.
