The band Hirie consists of vocalist Hirie along with a team of Cris Hampton/sax, Andrew McKee/tb, Andy Flore/b, Blaine Dillinger/g, John Asher/dr, Dan Hastie/B3-p and various other guests. The sound is based on reggae with dashes of calypso. The most ska-oriented pieces are the peppy “You Won’t Be Alone” and the fun and sweaty “Queen.” Hirie herself has a nasal-indie sound and delivery, working it well on the poppish title track and teaming up with earth toned Don Corleon on “Boom Fire.” Quite intriguing in its stray from the dub of the chunky “Woman Comes First” and the pulsing chunky of “Renegade” is the inclusion of Hawaiian guitar and a ukulele feel on “Almost Home” and “Ride The Wave.” A bit of Polynesia comes to Jamaica!
