Music from legendary bassist Charlie Haden’s 2011 concert at the Middelheim Festival is captured here along with three pieces with Steve Swallow at the helm in this final collection of material. The two last works include an interpretation of “Blue in Green” and Haden’s own “Song for the Whales,” both which include swaying rhythms provided by Matt Wilson’s drums and languid yet clean tenor sax and swayingly agonizing harmonies from the horns. The other three pieces are from the pen of pianist Carla Bley, with Wilson providing a gentle march on the title track. Some bluesy brass and tuba work moans on “Utviklingssang” and the trumpet sighs with scorn on “Silent Spring.” The feel of the entire collection is loose, thoughtful and heartfelt, not unlike the famed bassist.
