Drummer Matt Slocum brings together an unorthodox trio of sax with Dayna Stephens and guitarist Steve Cardenas through a mix of jazz standards and originals. Stephens’ tenor is soft and breathy, dreamily floating on “Passaic” and floating during “Afterglow” while his soprano gets prismatic with Cardenas on “Atlantic” and bops on the alto with Slocum’s ride cymbal on the bopping “Relaxin’ At Camarillo.” For his part, Slocum works on creating moods, dainty on the ride with Cardenas on “I Can’t Believe That You’re In Love With Me” and brushing with nimble charm on “For Alin.” Unpretentious and patient, with lots of rewards. Gotta see this in concert!
