Tenor saxist Livio Almeida leads a post bop band of Vitor Goncalves/p, Eduardo Belo/b and Zack O’Farrill/dr through a collection of his well conceived originals. He’s got a thick tone, and uses it well on the Latin cooker “Sambasus” as well as as the elliptical “Just Memories” which has his horn as fluffy as a Nimbus cloud. . Goncalves’ piano delivers a stark into to “Agony” before O’Farrill’s drumming pops the tune into overdrive. The leader switches to soprano sax for a shadowy “Living in the Dark” while guest Adam O’Farrill brings his trumpet for a quick bopper of “Bluesbao” and a stretched out title track. Muscular music.
