Brazilian composer Benji Kaplan presents 12 of his pieces with full arrangements in bands of various sizes. He sings and plays guitar as well, and Ben Kono’s conduction of the band makes for some rich textures and atmospheres. Lots of flutes, reeds and brass are mixed together on songs like “Amargura” and “Rabiscando” which mix old world sounds and harmonies with complex angles. Lovel strings blend with voices on “Ceu Alberto” and things get quite artsy for Kaplan’s singing as its accompanied by clarinets, flutes and strings on “A Gente Se Manifesta.” Sophisticated yet sensuous.
