Are you a sucker for anything Brazilian? How can you not believe in a loving God when the best of German and Latin genes were put together to create this masterful race? But, I digress..
Singer/songwriter Carla Hassett, born in Brazil and now living in the US brings out fresh tunes that continue the path started by the likes of Jobim and Gil. Her voice is stronger and a bit more bel canto than the trailblazers, but it works well here with a mix of guitars, keyboards and horns supplied by Joao Pedro Mourao, Andre de Santanna, Leonardo Costa and others.
Over irresistible and sensuous grooves, her strong delivery caresses “We Belong Here” and the lithe samba of “Sem Calor”. Some rich pulses from the B3 and bass drive the pulsating “Cadeira Da Paca” and she is dreamy on “Sangue Da Terra.” Some electric effects and her English voice changes the pace to create an indie feel on “A Little More Blue” while strings and flute add lovely drapery on “Quando Me Desamericanizer.” Her composing is impressive, and her delivery is ebulliently intimate. Good show-any LA trips coming up?
