Here’s some fresh sounds from SFO-based trumpeter Will Magid, who puts together a band for this 9 song album that is fresh, swinging and fun. He’s got a lovely sound on his horn, as he displays on “Prelude to Mars” but he mixes it into a wide swath of moods, lilting it with a soulful “Paris Dreams” and getting urban hip-hoppy on “A Frog’s Fantasy.” The ASW Orchestra that he teams with mixes strings, saxes, keyboards and a rhythm team that can deliver a B3 on a reggae-got-soul calypso’d “The Walk” or can saunter with snapping fingers as Sharlotte Gibson’s voice and Kevin Wong’s cabaret piano mix like oil and water on “Icarian Heights.” Synthesized soul gets down on “Set Me Free” and spacey R&B Keyboards get you on the Soul Train on ”The Crown.” Never a dull moment!
