At one time,Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon was the all time selling album. Here, Boris Scavoldelli delivers a freeish jazz interpretation of it. He does all vocals, vocal “noises” and electronics along with Raffaele Casarano/sax-el, Marco Bardoscia/b-el and various guests on guitars and the ubiquitous “electronics.”
Savoldelli’s voice is sort of raspy and sinister, sounding more like he’s reciting some warning poster rather than singing lyrics. The songs are all in order of the original album, so it’s easy to follow along and compare notes. Lots of electronic oozings, pulsating bass and reeds eventually coalesce into a groove on “Speak To Me,” “Breathe” and “On the Run” before the raspy vocals trudge along the thunky “Time.” Dewa Budjana’s guitar on “Us And Them” has lots of sound effects, Uk569 includes background sounds on the former and “Any Colour You Like” and more and more voices and electronics veer in and out like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride” on the desultory “Brain Damage” and “Eclipse.” Are they going to do the Syd Barrett song book next?
