JAZZ FROM COLOMBIA? MAKU Soundsystem: Mezcla

Yes, they are based in NYC, but most of the artists from MAKU come from that hot bed of jazz, Colombia. Here, you get a taste of what “Afro-Cuban” REALLY sounds like, as sounds from two continents jab back and forth on this torrentially exciting album.

The key feature here is the Farfisa organ. It leads the way through the high powered and sax clamoring “Agua” as well as the pulsating and soulful “Positivo.” A dash of the 60s is present because of this keyboard, with percussion and guitar on “Let It Go” along with a warm trombone solo making you feel like you’re in a Get Smart episode. The Afro part of “Afro Cuban” come in with wiled reeds on the rollicking “La Inevitable” and “What Do You Wish For” while it’s 2 am at the Copa with some sweaty singing by bassist Juan Ospina along with the Farfisa on “Happy Hour.” Lots of party music here! Do they do weddings?
