Gregorio Uribe Big Band: Cumbia Universal

Here’s an exciting mix of modern jazz and traditional latin sounds, lead by Gregorio Uribe, who arranges the sounds, sings and plays the accordion along with a snappy big band.

The salsa gets rollicking with a thick sax section as Uribe sings on the hard hitting “Yo Vengo” asthe bopping “El Avispao” features some sonorous bariton sax work by Carl Maraghi. The penetrating percussion serves as a foundation for Slange Prat’s vocals on “Que Vamos A Hacer Con Este Amor?” while Ruben Blades mixes with Uribe’s old world lilting accordion on”Cumbia Universal.” Uribe sings in both English and Spanish on the exciting roller coaster set up by the percussion and sax section on the dramatic “Welcome to the Capitol” which sets up for even more sparks to fly as the Afro-Cuban groove gives a whole new feel the The Beatles’ “Come Together.” The album closes with a lusty and passionate groove on “Ya Comanzo La Fiesta” making you hope they’ll hit LA some time soon.  Bravo!
